Four of the Six women I have called best friends over the years have been victims of rape, 2 have been victims of domestic violence. It is for these women and the thousands more, that I am a violence prevention educator for the local rape crisis center in my city.
My friends questioned themselves for years after the incidence of rape. Every area of their lives was touched by this crime. They questioned themselves, their self esteem suffered, one friend developed bulimia. They stayed silent about what had happened to them for years before seeking support and counseling.
No one should feel shame for this horrible crime. We all should support victims and help them get the help they need to feel whole again. I am committed to help end the sexism that contributes to the problem and hinders victims getting help.
